How to build habits that stick with a streak tracker
By the Planwell team at Sumletter, , 6 min read
To build a habit that sticks, pick one or two habits you can finish in under a minute, attach each to a fixed moment of your day, check in every day, and decide in advance what you will do after a missed day. A streak tracker helps by turning each check-in into a visible chain you do not want to break. It works best when you treat a missed day as a gap to close, not a reason to quit.
The short version
- Start with one or two habits, not ten. Each one should be something you can check off in under a minute.
- Write the habit as an action ("read 20 pages"), not an intention ("read more").
- Attach it to a fixed moment, such as "after I make coffee", so you are not relying on memory or mood.
- Check in every day, ideally right after you do it, so the record stays honest.
- Decide now what happens after a missed day. The rule is simple: do it again the next day.
How do I pick a habit I will actually keep?
Choose something small enough that you could do it on your worst day, whether you track it on paper or in an app such as Planwell on the App Store. A habit that needs an hour and perfect conditions will fail the first time you are tired or busy.
Pick one or two habits and stop there. Every extra habit is another daily decision, and a long list tends to collapse all at once.
Make it checkable in under a minute
A habit works as a streak only if you can tell, with no argument, whether you did it. Compare these:
- "Read more" is vague. Did you read one paragraph or one chapter?
- "Read 20 pages" is clear. You either did or you did not.
- "Get fit" cannot be checked off. "Walk for 10 minutes" can.
If a habit feels too big, shrink it to a tiny version you would still do when you have no energy, such as "just put on your shoes". On a bad day the tiny version keeps the chain alive.
Attach it to a fixed moment
A habit with no cue depends on you remembering. Link it to something you already do every day:
- After I make coffee, I read 20 pages.
- After I brush my teeth at night, I write one line in my journal.
- When I sit down at my desk, I drink a glass of water.
What is a streak good for, and where does it backfire?
A streak is a visible chain of days. Its strength is simple: you can see the chain, and you do not want to be the one who breaks it. On a day when you have no motivation, a number that says 12 days is a small but real reason to do the thing anyway.
It backfires when it turns into all or nothing thinking. If a missed day makes you feel the whole effort is ruined, you may drop the habit altogether, which is worse than missing one day.
Decide what you do after a missed day
Make the rule before you need it, while you are calm:
- A missed day is information, not a verdict. Note why it happened (travel, illness, a late night).
- Do the tiny version the very next day. Restarting small matters more than restarting big.
- Look at the longer record, not just the current count. A year with a few gaps is still a year of showing up.
How do I track habits in Planwell?
Planwell is an iPhone app that holds 15 trackers, and habits are one of them. In the app the tracker is called Streaks, and the App Store listing calls it habits. New subscribers get a 7 day free trial.
Add a habit
Tap the + button in Streaks to open the New habit form. It has fields that match the method above:
- Habit, for the name, for example "Read 20 pages".
- Why it matters, a line to remind you of the reason.
- Tiny version, the smallest version you would still do on a bad day.
- Cue, the moment you attach it to, for example "After I make coffee".
You can also switch on a reminder for a habit. It is a notification you can set to every day or every 2 days, at one time or two.
Check in every day
Each habit is a card with its name, its streak count (for example "6 day streak") and a round check-in button on the right. Tap the button when you have done it. Tap it again to remove today's check-in if you tapped by mistake.
At the top of the screen, a header reads "1 of 2 checked in today", so you can see at a glance how many habits are done. Underneath it, Planwell shows your longest streak, for example "Longest streak: 6 days".
See a year of check-ins
The Activity section shows a calendar grid of your check-ins, with the total count above it. Tap a day to see which habits you checked in on that date. It is a quick way to spot weak days of the week.
Get nudged on Home
Home shows at most one nudge at a time. If a habit is not yet logged today, the nudge can say, for example, "You haven't logged No sugar yet", with a Done button and a Not now button. You can finish the check-in from there without opening the tracker.
You can also check in by typing or speaking to the assistant. The assistant can be wrong, so check the result if the streak matters to you. For more on logging by voice, read Voice logging: how to track your day without typing. A simple plan for your first two weeks
- Pick one habit and write it as an action you can finish in under a minute.
- Write its cue and its tiny version for bad days.
- Check in right after you do it, every day.
- After a missed day, do the tiny version the next day and carry on.
- After two weeks, look at your history and decide whether to add a second habit.
If you want a place to keep that record, Download Planwell for iPhone. It needs iOS 18 or later, and there is no Android app yet.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best habit tracker app for iPhone?
The best one is the one you open every day, so choose one that makes a check-in take a single tap. Planwell's Streaks tracker is built around that: one round button per habit, a streak count, and a Home nudge if you have not logged a habit yet.
How many habits should I track at once?
One or two. A short list is easier to keep up, and you can add more once the first ones feel automatic.
What should I do if I miss a day?
Do the tiny version of the habit the next day and carry on. One missed day is a gap in the record, and the longest streak and year view in a tracker show that it does not cancel everything before it.
Does the habit tracker need Apple Health?
No. Habit check-ins do not use Apple Health, and Apple Health access in Planwell is optional and read only.
